ENG 112: Writing in the Discipline: Writing in the Disciplines

Help! I'm Stuck!

Step 1: You are writing about problems in the career you chose, not how individuals handle those problems. You want articles written by individuals in the field.

Step 2: Begin by looking at faculty that are listed at the school you intend to transfer to. If you have not decided, choose a state university that is a “research facility” in your field.

-UNC School of Information and Library Science (SIL)

          -About Us

-30 Full Time Faculty (select and choose a bio to preview; are they published?)
Choose someone who maybe specializes in an area that you are fascinated or curious about                 (ex: multicultural children's literature)

Step 3: Choose a faculty member who is published; this information would be in the bio.

Step 4: Try to track down the article OR articles that this person wrote. Go to the Scholarly Sources + Research tab and try ProQuest Central for your article search. You can do a subject search or try searching for a title directly in Advanced Search.

"The goal here is to find a wide range of articles that show what sorts of questions people are researching, what problems they are solving, and what experiments and surveys they are running within your profession."
-E. Pitts, CCCC English Instructor

Appalachian State University

Appalachian State University and their Writing Across the Curriculum instructors have created a guide for Writing in the Disciplines. For more information visit the site here.

Guidelines for Writing in the Disciplines

WAC Consultant Dennis Bohr and University Writing Center Consultants contributed to the creation of these files. Bohr also solicited feedback from professors in the respective disciplines to ensure the accuracy of the guidelines.
