October 23, 2024 Minutes:

  1. Call to Order (Kristen Leverentz; 2:30 P.M.)
  2. Adoption of Agenda
    1. Fernando Schiefelbein motioned.
    2. Brett Cabradillia seconded.
    3. None opposed; the agenda was approved.
  3. Approval of Minutes from the August 2024 Meeting  (See “08-13-2024 Faculty Assembly Minutes.docx”)
    1. The minutes from the August 13, 2024, Faculty Assembly meeting were published in the Faculty Assembly SharePoint and were distributed to the Faculty Assembly via email. 
    2. Hearing no corrections, the approval of the minutes was motioned by Bethany Hunter and seconded by Alex Jackson.
    3. None opposed; the minutes from the August 2024 meeting were approved. 
  4. Standing Committee Reports
    1. Student Welfare – David Vandevelde- No attendance hearings have been held.
    2. Member Welfare – Bethany Hunter – Bethany will be stepping down as chair. Ian Hegger was voted in as the new chair.
    3. Community of Practice – Dan Dupuis – Kristen gave the announcement for Dan; a call for proposals will go out this week for the Jan. 3 PD day.
    4. Faculty Evaluation—Fernando Schiefelbein—There is nothing to report. At the next FE meeting, they will discuss student evaluation surveys.
    5. Bylaws/Nominating – Fernando Schiefelbein- Nothing new to report.
    6. Wellness and Activities – Christina Lewis- Provided information/updates on the Health and Wellness Challenge.
    7. Recruitment & Retention – Kristen Leverentz – The Major Specific Pathways subcommittee has met to review the pathways for updates and changes. Regarding the Rack Cards subcommittee, PIO is currently working on updating rack cards. The College Events subcommittee needs to meet.
  5. New Business
    1. Graduation Update from Jess Mand- May 17th, 2025 is the graduation date; faculty and student arrival 8:30-9:00 am. Faculty should arrive no later than 9 am. The ceremony begins at 10 am, and luncheon is to follow. Keep an eye out for the cap and gown order in mid-February. A brief overview of the new emergency preparedness plan for the event was discussed. This past graduation was the first year an emergency protocol was required and put in place. Respite and evacuation areas were also new implementations.
    2. Enrollment Update
      1. There has been an increase in enrollment and FTE. Further detailed information was not received at the time of the meeting.
    3. Budget Update
      1. The current state budget up for approval has Propel NC in it, which will give approximately 64 million dollars across the NC community college system, and it also has enrollment increase funds.
      2. The enrollment increase funds will not affect us as we did not have increased enrollment over the last two years.

Now is a great time for a success coach to speak with your class; students are often struggling midsemester.

The upcoming election for Executive Committee Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary will take place during the March 2024 meeting.

        2. Members may nominate themselves or others.
        3. Nominations will be open until 8 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2025.

A. ADMISSIONS & COUNSELING SERVICES

ADA Resources

There are a variety of resources included under ADA Resources in Faculty Headquarters that faculty are encouraged to review.

Community and Mental Health Resources & the Student Assistance Program

The Community and Mental Health Resources web page on Coastal’s website has been updated to include resources for emergency and crisis assistance, local community resources, and the MyGroup Student Assistance Program (SAP).

  • The SAP is a service that is offered free of charge to all Coastal students. Calling the number listed connects a student (or family member) with a qualified professional who can arrange for confidential free online and/or telephonic support for short-term counseling, financial consultation, and legal support.
  • We also have links to national crisis hotlines as well as various community resources.

Any faculty or staff member may also contact Student Services (x6394 or x6332) to request a counselor speak with any student who indicates they may either be in crisis and/or experiencing mental health concerns.

B. COLLEGE FOUNDATION

Food Pantry

Coastal’s Food Pantry is available Monday- Friday from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. Additional times and hours can be arranged as needed. The Food Pantry is available for all Coastal Family (students and employees).

Edward Smith Textbook Lending Library

The College Foundation has a wonderful book loan program. Please send students to our office to determine if we can assist them with a textbook need.

Please encourage all students to apply! E. GENERAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE

Fall 2024 Gen. Ed. Assessment

For the Fall 2024 semester, students were assessed in MAT 110 and MAT 143 on their ability to demonstrate basic quantitative skills appropriate to their chosen fields of study. Students were also assessed in CIS 110 on their ability to apply basic computer skills. The results will be reported prior to our March meeting.

Spring 2025 Gen. Ed. Assessment

For the Spring 2025 semester, students will be assessed in COM 231 and ENG 102 on their ability to communicate effectively in oral English. Students will also be assessed in ENG 112 on the ability to demonstrate information literacy.

H. MATH LAB

Please encourage your students to visit our Math Tutoring Lab located in the 2nd floor of the LRC (room 207).  We can help students with all of their math courses, and even with Chemistry courses too!

This is 100% free and no appointment is needed.  (Chemistry availability may be limited).

The Math Lab is a free resource available to all Coastal students and is open the following hours for Fall Semester 2023:

  • Monday: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday: 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Thursday: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Types of Sessions

Face-to-Face Tutoring is offered on a walk-in basis upstairs in the LRC in room 207 during the posted hours. Appointments are not required. Feel free to stop by the lab for help before or after your classes.

Online Tutoring is offered for students who are not able to come to campus during the posted hours. Students may email or send a scan of their question(s). The tutor will reply with a detailed solution or an explanation of a concept. The student does not have to be available at a specific time. Please allow a 24-hour lead time. Contact the tutor at mattutoring@coastalcarolina.edu to submit a question.

Video Tutoring sessions allow the student to meet with a tutor through a video conferencing platform, so the student must be available during their appointment time. They will be able to see and hear the tutor, and the screen sharing capability will allow both to view the problem(s) and solution(s). Please allow a 24-hour lead time. Contact the tutor at mattutoring@coastalcarolina.edu to make an appointment.

J. NEW RIVER ANTHOLOGY

The New River Anthology will be accepting submissions for the 2025 Anthology. Students can submit poetry, fiction, non-fiction, artwork, and photography for consideration. Please remind them to include the attached cover sheet with their submissions. They can send their work to newriveranthology@coastalcarolina.edu.

K. SUCCESS COACH TEAM

The Success Coaches will be hosting Cocoa With Coaches on Wednesday, January 15, 2024 from 8:30 am – 10:30 am in both the MS first floor lobby and the Trades lobby and asks instructors to share with their students and encourage them to stop by.

M. Writer’s Center

Spring 2025 Appointment Options & Hours of Operation

Please continue to encourage students to use the WC’s services. The Writer’s Center will reopen on Monday, January 13. During the spring semester, students have the option of face-to-face, video, or document feedback appointments.

Class Visits

Located on the Writer's Center website, you will find a video that can be used in lieu of class visits; however, if you would like a coordinator to visit your class in person, feel free to email writerscenter@coastalcarolina.edu to set that up.

WC Resources

Our writing handouts are located on the Writer's Center website under "Writing Resources." These may be helpful to use in your classes or to give students if they need additional writing help.

Updated Assignments

English department faculty should update their assignments in SharePoint.

Syllabus Statement

The Writer’s Center is a free resource available to all Coastal Carolina Community College students. Please check our website for the current semester’s hours. To access the WC schedule, click “Make an Appointment” on the Writer’s Center website, which can be accessed through the WCOnline icon on your MyCCCC Portal.  You may also contact us at writerscenter@coastalcarolina.edu or 910-938-6354. 

Daytime Hours: Monday – Friday, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Virtual Evening Hours: Monday - Thursday 5:00pm - 7:00pm (daily availability might vary depending on staffing)

Types of Sessions:

  • Face-to-Face Tutoring sessions are held in the Writer’s Center in room 225 on the second floor of the LRC.
  • Video Tutoring sessions allow you to meet with a tutor through a video conference hosted by Microsoft Teams, which is similar to Zoom, so you must be available during your appointment time. You will be able to see and hear your tutor, and the screen sharing capability will allow both you and the tutor to view and edit your document. Join the video session using the link in your appointment. Make sure to use Microsoft Teams app.
  • Document feedback is offered as a secondary type of session for students who are unavailable during our operating hours. You will attach your Microsoft Word document to your appointment form before it begins, and a tutor will download it and send it back to you via email with thorough comments on it within two hours after your appointment ends.
