ENG 111: Argument Research Project: Research & Sources

What is a Scholarly Source?

  • Written by a professional in or related to the field they are writing in (ex: A Psychologist writing a paper on child development)
  • Published in an academic journal (ex: Journal of Psychology)
  • 5+ pages
  • List of references used
  • Specific focus and research that is stated in the introduction; this is not an "about" article

Ask yourself:

1. How long is this?

2. Who wrote it?

3. Are there sources/a list of references?

Evaluating a Source

A B C!

  • Author and Authority: who wrote it and where do they work
  • Bias and beneficiary: who might be benefiting from this information? Does it seem one sided?
  • Currency: How relevant and current is this information?
