Al-Qaeda

Shifting gears, we delve into the emergence and evolution of Al-Qaeda—a pivotal entity that shaped the trajectory of global events for decades to come. Rooted in strong ideological currents, Al-Qaeda's genesis can be traced to the confluence of historical, political, and cultural factors. This section presents sources for contextualizing the rise of this organization, allowing researchers insight into the complex interplay of factors that culminated in the events of September 11, 2001.

Al-Qaeda

Established by Osama Bin Laden in the late 1980s, Al-Qaeda originally functioned as a force to fight against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (Combs & Slann, 2007).By 1998, Bin Laden grew Al-Qaeda into a well funded and powerful terrorist organization, with the aim to fight against those who had declared "war against God and his messenger"—by demanding every Muslim to kill Americans as a part of their duty (Commission on Terrorist Attacks upon the United States, 2004).
